Set in 500 acres of beautiful parkland and surrounded by fantastic formal gardens and a lake, this restored 12th Century Cistercian Abbey is an intriguing and relaxing place to stay within a stones throw of Birmingham, Warwick and Stratford upon Avon.
Popular for weddings in the summer months, there’s no shortage of photo opportunities both inside and out this fascinating property. Owned by the aptly named “No Ordinary Hotels” group, the atmosphere on arrival is somewhere between theme park and history lesson as you walk into the ornate and gently lit medieval reception.
Friendly staff and porters can from there guide you through the maze of corridors that connects luxurious bedrooms, receptions, conferencing facilities, bars and a fine restaurant.
I stayed in a Feature Bedchamber in a newly constructed wing of the property. The room itself was spacious with all the mod-cons, but was filled with nods to the medieval roots of the area. The sumptuous four-poster bed, the ornate furniture – and up the spiral staircase within the suite (and it was more a suite than a room) a roll-top bath – adjacent to an enormous walk in shower.
Food and Drink
But a good night’s rest is not the only treat in store at Coombe Abbey. The Garden Roome restaurant offers a fantastic menu of locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables, fantastic service from friendly and knowledgeable staff and some of the best wines from around the world. The relaxed atmosphere and equisite food is a perfect combination to get you in the mood for an evening stroll trough the grounds, or a nightcap in the adjacent bar.
