Did you realise X Factor’s Caitlyn Vanbeck had been on the show before?

Scherzinger cried, Cowell said she's the next Kelly Clarkson and Louis Walsh called her the best singer they've had this series... yet she got cut at Six Chair Challenge last year and no one mentioned it

When Nicole Scherzinger is crying, Simon Cowell is dubbing you the next Kelly Clarkson and Louis Walsh is saying you’re the best they’ve had on the show so far you’ve got to be pretty darn good, right?

Well, 18-year-old Caitlyn Vanbeck from Edinburgh certainly is good (that audition tonight was quite the performance), yet she was on last year’s show – made it all the way to Six Chair Challenge in fact – and no one mentioned it.

Granted Cowell was the only judge that would know given that the others weren’t there. But while he was praising how good she is, and saying she’s the reason they make the show, he didn’t bring up the fact that she’d been here before. Nor did it come up when Caitlyn herself was talking about her reasons for coming on the show.

As for us viewers, you’d have to look hard to find evidence of her on last year’s series as insiders tell us her auditions weren’t shown on screen. Indeed, we’d included her in a round-up of singers we thought we’d see for the first time at Six Chairs last year and then she wasn’t shown then, cut ahead of the Judges’ Houses line-up by then Girls mentor Rita Ora.

There’s a brief glimpse of her at Boot Camp when she’s doing the group challenge and this online (seemingly fan-made) sizzle reel gathers together bits of her in group shots.

But X Factor history has plenty of positive stories about people coming back: namely Alexandra Burke whose second attempt in 2008 saw her win the show. Maybe 2016 is Vanbeck’s year?

The X Factor continues Sunday at 8:00pm on ITV
