Coronation Street scenes featuring sacked star Marc Anwar to be shown – but Sharif’s presence will be minimised

Corrie is taking steps to ensure that the character of Sharif is less visible

Upcoming Coronation Street scenes featuring sacked actor Marc Anwar are to be shown, although the ITV soap is taking steps to ensure that the presence of his character Shaif Nazir is minimised in the run-up to his exit.

Advertisement understands that Corrie considers it too late to edit Anwar out of next week’s episodes completely without having to scrap entire broadcasts. But the show is giving urgent consideration to making sure that Sharif is less visible in the near future.

Anwar is currently involved in a high-profile storyline that has seen Sharif’s seven-year affair with Nazir family friend Sonia revealed to viewers. But it is believed that the plot ultimately shifts focus onto Yasmeen, Zeedan and Alya – all of which makes Sharif’s (and therefore Anwar’s) presence less vital.

The actor has been dismissed from Coronation Street after posting alleged “racially offensive” comments on Twitter. Anwar – who has played Sharif Nazir since February 2014 – has had his contract with Corrie terminated with immediate effect after branding Indian people “b******ds” and “p**s-drinking c**ts”.

ITV said in a statement: “We are deeply shocked by the entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc Anwar. We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect.”
