Tom Cruise has filed a $50m (£31m) lawsuit against a leading magazine publisher in response to an article that claimed he “abandoned” his daughter Suri in the immediate aftermath of his divorce from Katie Holmes.
The Hollywood star, 50, is suing Bauer Media Group, publisher of American magazine Life & Style, following a cover story in the July edition of the publication entitled “Suri in tears, abandoned by her dad”.
Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, stressed that the actor was not someone who enjoyed taking legal action, but insisted that the stories were a “vicious lie”.
“Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri,” said Fields in a statement. “She’s a vital part of his life and always will be.
“To say he has ‘abandoned’ her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible.”
He also said that Cruise would donate any financial award from the case to charity.
Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes, 33, filed for divorce earlier this year after six-years of marriage.
Although the custody arrangements of their daughter were kept private in the divorce settlement, it is understood she spends the majority of her time with Holmes in New York.
Cruise has two other children, Connor, 17, and Isabella, 19, adopted with ex-wife, Australian actress Nicole Kidman.
