Coronation Street: Debbie Rush to leave – will Anna Windass take down Pat Phelan?

Show boss Kate Oates says Anna will be seen "fighting for her family" in her exit storyline

Actress Debbie Rush – who has played beleaguered Anna Windass on Coronation Street since 2008 – will leave the ITV soap in early 2018.

With show bosses planning for Anna to have a fight with “old enemies” as part of her exit storyline, Corrie fans will no doubt be wondering whether a new clash with Pat Phelan is now on the cards.

As Corrie fans know, Anna was once blackmailed into having sex with the psychopathic Pat – a despicable act for which the villainous builder has never really been punished.

Recent episodes have seen Anna’s daughter Faye grow closer to Phelan thanks to his mentoring of the teenager’s boyfriend Seb.

Now, producer Kate Oates is planning a nail-biting departure for Anna, but will the Windass matriarch make it through in one piece?

Speaking tonight, Oates said: “It’s always sad when a huge talent like Debbie Rush decides to move to pastures new.

“But Debbie’s decision to pursue other roles will allow us to play an exciting exit story for Anna, which will see her fighting for her family and tackling old enemies head-on.”

Rush herself said: “The decision to leave was not made lightly. I love playing Anna and will miss working with the fantastic cast and crew.

“I don’t know what the future holds but I am excited to explore what other acting opportunities are out there.

“I am very grateful for all the brilliant storylines I have been given during my time on Coronation Street and am very much looking forward to what is in store for Anna in the run up to my departure next year.”
