Coronation Street to air tribute to Manchester terrorist attack victims tonight

"We felt it was important to show our support," said a spokesperson

This evening’s episode of Coronation Street will carry a tribute to the victims of Monday’s terrorist attack in Manchester.

A photograph with the words ‘We Stand Together’ will be shown in place of the usual sponsorship bumper at the end of the show at 8:00pm.

The soap’s social media accounts will also carry the same image as a mark of respect to the 22 people who lost their lives and those who were injured in the atrocity at the Manchester Arena.

A spokesperson for the show said: “Manchester is the home of Coronation Street and we felt it was important to show our support for the victims of the bombing and the people of this great city.”

The tribute comes following the announcement of the death of Martyn Hett, the PR manager and Coronation Street superfan, who was killed after attending the Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena.

Speaking today, actress Dolly Rose Campbell, who plays Gemma Winter, paid tribute to 29-year-old Hett:

“I first met Martyn at Manchester Pride two years ago. He was a lovely man full of spirit and a massive fan of Coronation Street.

“It was a pleasure to spend time with Martyn – he was funny, smart and someone that spread joy everywhere he went.

“He had met many of the cast members and the crew – everyone here is in shock at the terrible news of his tragic death and are sending love to his family and friends and those of all the other victims involved.

“On behalf of everyone at Coronation Street, we send love to the whole of Manchester at this this terrible time.”
