INTERSTELLAR (12)
★★★★

He blew our minds with Inception and gave the comic-book genre a menacing makeover with his Batman trilogy, but director Christopher Nolan’s latest film is his most ambitious yet. The fate of mankind lies in the success of Matthew McConaughey’s mission to the stars – but with days away equalling years back home, time is running out.

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray and download

GET ON UP (12)
★★★

This look at the life of Soul Brother Number 1, Mr James Brown, shares much in common with the biopics Ray and Walk the Line, in that it portrays the singer’s life growing up dirt-poor in the American South, discovering a gift for music, and overcoming tragedy and his own personal demons. It’s a wild rags-to-riches tale, with the funky musical performances the main attraction.

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray and download

ST VINCENT (12)
★★★★

Bill Murray plays reassuringly to type in this comedy about a grouchy guy who takes under his wing the 12-year-old kid who moves in next door. And just as you’d hope, the reprobate oldster gets his young charge into all sorts of trouble. Melissa McCarthy tones down her usual outrageous act as the boy’s mum, and there’s colourful support from Chris O’Dowd and Naomi Watts.

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray and download

PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR (U)
★★★

Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private – that crack quartet of avians from the Madagascar series – get their own spin-off feature with this spy-spoofing adventure. Benedict Cumberbatch voices the lupine leader of the animal task force that variously helps and hinders our bird-brained friends, as they attempt to thwart the nefarious plans of a multi-tentacled supervillain called “Dave”.

Formats: DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and download

HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 (15)
★★★

Having exacted revenge on their employers in the so-so 2011 original film, this sequel finds Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day striking out to form their own company. But when a huge order of their “shower buddy” gizmo falls through, they find themselves forced once again into taking desperate measures. But if you can’t even spell “kidnapping”, what hope have you got in carrying one out successfully?
