Django Unchained ★★★★
More Stetsons and saddles following The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Homesman earlier this week, but Quentin Tarantino’s take is a curious dichotomy; an audacious, slavery-themed western littered with the “n-word” yet clearly pitched from an abolitionist perspective. Steeped in the period detail of the mid-19th century antebellum South, it has Jamie Foxx’s titular slave freed by Christoph Waltz’s German bounty hunter in exchange for help tracking two outlaws. Add Samuel L Jackson as a forelock-tugging but fearsome Uncle Tom and you have a darkly comic and violent combination.
