Is The Princess Diaries making a comeback?

The teen franchise that made Anne Hathaway's name is reportedly being revived for a third film

Shut up, shut up, shut UP! A third Princess Diaries film is rumoured to be in the works.

Based on the books by Meg Cabot, The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) saw Anne Hathaway play high school student-turned-Princess of Genovia Mia Thermopolis. The films made her a major star and also featured Julie Andrews as the fictional European state’s queen.

Now there are reportedly plans in the works for a third film, eleven years after Mia was crowned Queen of Genovia in the sequel. According to industry website The Tracking Board, plot details are being kept firmly under wraps but there’s “an intention to launch a reboot of the franchise” with no news yet on whether Hathaway will be involved.

Along with major box office figures – the first film pulled in £105 million ($165m) worldwide – the Princess Diaries franchise has some big names pulling the strings behind the scenes. The late Whitney Houston produced the first instalment with Debra Chase who is reportedly back on board for a third.

Garry Marshall (the man behind Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride) sat in the director’s chair, and he and Houston returned for the second film which was written by Shonda Rhimes (she of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder fame).

We’ve got everything crossed a third film becomes a reality but, in the meantime, relive the Princess Diaries magic below:
