Doctor Who and Broadchurch actor Arthur Darvill to star in Broadway production of Once

The British actor - known for his portrayals of Rory Williams and Paul Coates - will make his Broadway debut alongside Joanna Christie

In recent months he’s been sent back in time by weeping angels in Doctor Who before donning his dog collar to play suspicious vicar Paul Coates in Broadchurch. But inbetween filming the two, Arthur Darvill appeared on stage in acclaimed West End production Our Boys. And now, the 30-year-old British actor is taking his skills to Broadway…

Darvill will appear alongside British stage actress Joanna Christie as ‘Guy’ and ‘Girl’ in the Tony Award-winning musical Once at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, taking over from temporary leads Ben Hope and Laura Dreyfus from Tuesday 23 April.

The hit musical – which has just made its debut in London’s West End – is based on the 2006 film and follows the tale of a Dublin street musician who is on the verge of giving up on his dream when a beautiful young woman walks into his life and takes his music to powerful new heights.

Both actors will be making their Broadway debut in the production, with Darvill’s previous stage roles also including Dr Faustus at Shakespeare’s Globe and Swimming with Sharks (Vaudeville Theatre). Christie is best known for playing the role of Jill Mason in Equus opposite Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe.
