It may sound like the most boring idea for a TV show, but The Seven Hour Train Journey to Oslo was a surprise hit in Norway, where more than one million viewers tuned in.
In a fast-paced world, where many people don’t have time to sit, unwind and appreciate the simple things, the ‘Slow TV’ concept is just about to take off.
British Airways loves the notion of leisurely viewing and has adopted the idea on its long haul in-flight entertainment systems, hoping to capture the imaginations of those who believe ‘the journey is as important as the destination’.
In July, BA will air the long Oslo train journey (above). If popular, the airline will try other marathon viewing sessions including bird feeding, knitting, and walks in the park.
British Airways’ in-flight entertainment manager, Richard D’Cruze said: “One of the team at our agency Spafax read about this unusual documentary that had become a cult hit in Norway and tracked it down. It fits perfectly with the ‘wallpaper’ style footage people find mesmerising in-flight.”
On board BA flights customers enjoy watching the moving map for hours, and this new programme range will expand on that same concept. D’Cruze explained that there’s something mesmerising about the experience: “There’s definitely a hypnotic, calming and entertaining quality to ‘Slow TV’ that is perfect for in-flight entertainment,” he said.
British Airways will also show highlights from the major sporting events this summer, including the FIFA World Cup, Wimbledon 2014 and Formula 1.
