Doctor Who, Downton, Midwife and the Royle Family head up Christmas Day TV

Get ready to start planning your Christmas Day viewing because the final TV schedules are in.

Doctor Who special The Snowmen introduces new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman in a teatime slot of 5:15pm on BBC1, while Downton Abbey on ITV1 at 8:45pm avoids a clash with BBC1’s own period offering Call the Midwife at 7:30pm.

The two major soaps also steer clear of one another, with Coronation Street on at 7:30pm on ITV1 (after Emmerdale) and EastEnders in a later slot of 8:45pm on BBC1.

Other festive specials include Strictly Come Dancing at 6:15pm on BBC1, The Choir: A Year with the Military Wives, following the members of Gareth Malone’s chart-topping ensemble on BBC2 at 8:45pm, and the Royle Family Christmas special – the first for two years – back on BBC1 at 9:45pm.

Earlier in the day, Top of the Pops also makes a return to BBC1 with acts including Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Girls Aloud and the as-yet-unnamed winner of The X Factor performing from 2pm, while at 4:35pm kids (and adults) can enjoy Room on the Broom, the animated adaptation of the picture book about a witch and her cat by children’s laureate Julia Donaldson.
