Coronation Street star Beverley Callard taking a break from Liz McDonald role

The Corrie legend is "battling the demons of depression"

Coronation Street icon Beverley Callard has been signed off from the ITV soap for up to two months on medical grounds.

The Corrie legend, who plays landlady Liz McDonald, has said that she is “battling the demons of depression” following the discontinuation of one of her medications.

Callard, 59, took to social media to thank fans who had sent her get well messages. In a series of tweets, the actress wrote:

before adding:

Back in 2013, Callard spoke to about the taboos that she felt surrounded mental health in the eyes of the public. Talking about her previous battles with depression, she said:

“I think some people see you as unreliable and flaky and that you might not be able to do your job as well as you could. And I was very aware that some people at Granada felt like that about me at the time.

“I didn’t want to be talked about like that because, if I take something on, I usually finish it to the very end and do the best that I can.”

A Corrie source said to the Sun of Callard’s current plight: “Bev has been taking different medications for the last two years then suddenly one was discontinued.

“It affected her mental health and affected her at work. It was a surprise to people that she was suddenly quite ill again. She’s hoping an alternative can be found and wants to return to work as soon as she is better.”

Let’s hope that Callard and Liz are back where she belongs behind that Rovers bar in the very near future!
