Nicole Kidman to shoot indie thriller Strangerland in Australia

The Moulin Rouge actress will get back to her Aussie roots, filming a new movie in the small town of Canowindra in New South Wales

American-born Aussie Nicole Kidman flew into Sydney last week, and will make her way to a tiny 2,000-people town to shoot thriller Strangerland.

Canowindra will close its main street for around 14 days for the filming of Strangerland, in which Kidman will play Catherine Parker – the mother of two children who go missing in the Australian outback.

Kidman will star alongside Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), who will play her husband in the movie, and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix), who will play the policeman leading the investigation.

This is one of many recent films Screen Australia has backed, creating $30m of expenditure in the nation. Screen Australia’s CEO Ruth Harley explained that Strangerland has “a strong creative vision and massive A-list festival potential”.

Meanwhile, Kidman said the film was the right choice to bring her back to Aus: “I am always looking for the right script to bring me home,” she said.

“The moment I read Strangerland I knew this was a film I couldn’t say no to.”

Strangerland is set for release in 2015.
