Ricky Gervais’s Derek watched by 2 million on Channel 4

Great ratings and extensive social media chatter mean a full series looks likely

An average audience of 2 million people (a 10 per cent share) on Channel 4, Channel 4 HD and Channel 4+1 watched Ricky Gervais’s comedy drama, Derek, last night, according to overnight ratings.

The one-off programme, originally made as a non-broadcast pilot, followed the fortunes of the titular care worker, played by Gervais, and his colleagues.  The show co-starred the excellent Kerry Godliman as Derek’s best friend, Hannah, and Gervais’s real best friend, Karl Pilkington, as the caretaker, in his first acting role.

Although no formal announcement has been made as to the future of the show, Gervais told press at a recent screening that he was already writing more episodes of the programme.  With such impressive viewing figures and social media chatter around the show last night, it looks likely Channel 4 will commission a full series in the near future.
