Natalie Portman is overwhelmed by her grief in new trailer for Jackie

The Black Swan actress plays a First Lady in mourning in the upcoming biopic

US politics has probably never been higher on the agenda than it is this week, so it’s fitting that the latest trailer for Natalie Portman’s Oscar tipped Jackie Kennedy biopic has hit the internet.

Jackie sees Portman portraying the then First Lady’s days at the White House, and her struggle to cope in the aftermath of her husband’s 1963 assassination.

And if the latest sneak peek is anything to go by, Portman’s portrayal will be a thoroughly emotional one.

Jackie is based on an interview Kennedy gave to Life magazine after her husband’s death. The film, directed by Pablo Larrain, explores the First Lady’s personal and private personas to discover who the woman behind the widow’s veil really was.

Peter Sarsgaard stars as JFK’s brother, Robert F Kennedy, while Greta Gerwig, Max Csella, Beth Grant, Billy Crudup and Richard E Grant round out the supporting cast.

JFK is played by Danish actor Caspar Phillipson, while the rather more recognizable John Hurt stars as ‘The Priest’.

The film is already generating quite a bit of Oscar buzz, with many tipping Portman to take her second gold statuette for her portrayal of the First Lady.

Jackie opens in UK cinemas on January 20th
