The first trailer for the Jumanji semi-reboot is here, plugging us right into the film’s video game setting.
Yes, as many fans theorised months in advance, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle will follow four teens as they’re beamed inside an 80s computer game, trapped within avatars coming in the form of Karen Gillan, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart.
It’s this concept that explains Gillan’s controversial outfit, with the sartorial choice intended to be a satire on female representation in video games. As Martha, the teen controlling the avatar remarks: “Why am I wearing half a shirt and short shorts in the jungle?!”
Still, although unhappy about her costume choice, it doesn’t stop Gillian’s character from unleashing several power moves during the trailer, including back-kicking an incoming cyclist and sprinting from a herd of super-sized Rhinos.
That’s more that can be said for Jack Black’s avatar, controlled by an iPhone-addicted millennial character (Bethany), as he gets chomped on by a hippo at the trailer’s close.
Yup, this film is going to be a lot goofier than the original. We’ll leave it up to you whether that’s a good thing or not…
