ALIEN: COVENANT ★★★
Original Alien director Ridley Scott is back on fearsomely familiar ground in more ways than one, as he follows up on the events of 2012’s Prometheus while returning to the horrifyingly halcyon days of face-hugging, body-bursting terror that shook up celluloid sci-fi back in 1979. With a spaceship full of unsuspecting colonists/victims, be prepared to be scared all over again.
MISS SLOANE ★★★
Jessica Chastain is a force to be reckoned with as the eponymous take-no-prisoners Washington lobbyist. But when the flame-haired firebrand butts heads with the gun industry and puts herself at loggerheads with former colleagues, the price could be too high.
Johnny Harris – so unforgettable in This Is England – draws on his own pugilistic past to write and star in the familiar tale of a broken-down boxer who seeks redemption by coming back to the ring for one last fight. Familiar it may be, but the star has support from Ian McShane, Ray Winstone and Michael Smiley, and they always punch above their weight.
