After the mixed reception for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the thought of yet another Indiana Jones movie might not excite everyone. But there’s no denying that the Indy franchise is always going to hold interest for many cinemagoers and the confirmation that the whip-cracking hero will return is definitely intriguing.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says a new film “will one day be made inside this company,” telling Vanity Fair, “when it will happen, I’m not quite sure. We haven’t started working on a script yet, but we are talking about it.”
What form the movie or movies would take also remains a mystery for now, but septuagenarian Harrison Ford can’t swashbuckle forever – we’d be more likely to hear his hip cracking than his whip-cracking if he carried on in action roles too much longer – so it seems fair to assume that if the movie is still some way off, Lucasfilm/Disney (which now owns the company) could be looking for new blood to portray the young Indy.
Chris Pratt is one of the stars whose names are being bandied about in connection with the role, and he certainly has the wry charisma of an Indiana Jones, but judging by what Kennedy says, any decision on the major details is unlikely to come for a while.
Until then, it’s just good to know that Crystal Skull will not be Indy’s last crusade…
