Pobol y Cwm topples Casualty to claim Radio Times TV Champion 2015 Soap crown

The Welsh series overcame competition from some of soaps big hitters to take the prize

After over 30,000 votes and an awful lot of surprises, the winner of the Soap round in Radio Times’ 2015 TV Champion is Welsh-language series Pobol y Cwm, taking 67% of the vote in the final against hospital-set drama Casualty.

The two shows (which are coincidentally both filmed in Cardiff’s Roath Lock studios, alongside Doctor Who) knocked out big hitters EastEnders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale in earlier rounds, with the strong fan campaign behind Pobol y Cwm eventually securing it the overall victory.

But the competition’s not over yet – Pobol y Cwm will now go through to face the winner of the comedy round in the next stage of the quest to be crowned Radio Times TV Show Champion 2015, a tournament that also includes rounds focusing on drama, online, kids, factual, entertainment and sci-fi.

In other words, the Pobol y Cwm fans had best rest their voting fingers until December, when the battle royale begins…
