First look! Downton Abbey’s Lily James as Disney’s Cinderella

The 24-year-old is getting ready to don those crystal slippers in Kenneth Branagh's live action adaptation of the classic fairytale

She plays troublemaker Lady Rose in Downton Abbey, and spends her days making mischief, dancing in jazz clubs and getting up to no good with married men…

But 24-year-old actress Lily James is set to pull on that iconic pair of crystal slippers and swap ITV’s ancestral pile for the fairytale world of Disney films.

The actress, who has also appeared in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Fast Girls, is starring as Cinderella in Disney’s live action adaptation of the classic story. And as filming starts in southeast England, Disney have released the first image of James playing the soon-to-be fairytale princess.

She looks just right, doesn’t she?

We are yet to catch a glimpse of them, but Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden is set to play James’ Prince Charming, while Helena Bonham Carter is signed on as Cinders’ fairy godmother. When it comes to the villains of the piece, Cate Blanchett will be the evil stepmother with Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera (who stars as Daisy in Downton Abbey) playing the ugly stepsisters.

Disney’s new Cinderella adaptation will be directed by Kenneth Branagh and is said to be inspired by Tim Burton’s 2010 live action remake of Alice in Wonderland.

The film will be the second time Disney have tackled the fable. Their cartoon version of the folk tale was released in 1950 and remains popular to this day.

Cinderella is set for release in March 2015.

Downton Abbey series four is currently on Sundays at 9:00pm on ITV.
