Hans Christian Andersen's
The Snow Queen
gets the full revisionist Disney-princess treatment in a dazzling fairy-tale adventure, a product of the studio's policy of injecting Broadway talent in order to refresh its animated output. Tony Award-winning Idina Menzel voices Elsa, the princess whose magical frostiness is so dangerous that she is separated from younger sister Anna (Kristen Bell). After becoming queen, Elsa reveals her chilling powers in a fit of rage, causing her kingdom to suffer continuous winter, and flees to the mountains. Anna proposes to find her and reverse the magic, so, together with a handsome swain, his trusty reindeer and an eternally optimistic snowman (a wonderfully funny Josh Gad) she journeys to the mountains. Full of vivid action and solid drama - thanks to surprising third-act twists -this flawless union of sharply modern comedy and thrilling spectacle (highlighted by Elsa building her glacial fortress of solitude) also has superb show-tune songs by Robert Lopez, whose previous work adorns
The Book of Mormon
and
Avenue Q
.
