Coronation Street actor John Michie, who plays killer Karl Munro, is to join the cast of BBC1’s Holby City.
Michie, who has been at the centre of a high-profile storyline that saw his character set fire to the Rovers Return and bring about the demise of Sunita Alahan (Shobna Gulati), will exit the ITV soap later this year.
Following his departure, Michie will then be seen on the hospital wards at Holby General as new consultant neurosurgeon Guy Self, a man who – according to show bosses – will “combine passion and unpredictability with a hint of danger”.
Of his new role, Michie – who also starred in ITV’s crime drama Taggart – said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the cast of Holby City and I’m looking forward to taking on a new challenge. My mum was a nurse and always wanted me to be a doctor not an actor so finally half her wish has come true!”
Oliver Kent, executive producer, added: “We’re very excited about John joining the Holby City family. He’s a great addition to the show and viewers can look forward to seeing some explosive storylines involving John’s character.”
News of Michie’s appointment comes following the announcement that actress Tina Hobley is to bow out of Holby City after more than 12 years playing ward sister Chrissie Williams.
