Star Trek and Star Wars are two of the oldest and most stalwart fandoms in the world, and they’ve had a friendly rivalry ever since they both showed up at the same convention. What’s more, while they’re both widely loved, they both have…let’s say some less celebrated moments in their history.
For those who don’t have an encyclopedic knowledge of the two universes, that’s Bill Shatner (James Kirk) calling out Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) on the Star Wars Holiday Special: a horrifying TV Christmas special that featured the main Star Wars cast travelling to Chewie’s home planet to meet his family, including father Itchy and son Lumpy.
It’s worse than it sounds: Carrie Fisher sang lyrics to the Star Wars theme. George Lucas once said that if he had the time, he would track down every copy of it in existence to smash with a hammer.
Unfortunately, he said that before the Internet caught on.
Epic burn, right? Well, Wookies aren’t known for backing down from a fight.
If you’re this far into the article, I don’t have to explain that The Final Frontier was directed by Shatner, and is considered one of the weaker Star Trek films. Spock has a brother and the Enterprise gets in a fight with God.
Nerd fights may require a lot of backstory, but they can be absolutely brutal.
