There were countless solar beams flying through the air. There was a man falling from hundreds of feet up in the air. There was even a Spiderman.
But still, none of the characters bit the dust in Captain America Civil War. If you don’t count Crossbones. Or Peggy Sue. Or Black Panther’s daddy T’Chaka. But apart from that, nobody, including the 12 foremost heroes in the film, dies.
Why? According to Hitflix, directors Joe and Anthony Russo and Marvel president Kevin Feige gave a very good reason for keeping the death count low when they spoke at a screening of the film last Friday…
Anthony Russo: I think the thing to remember is, we do talk about every possible scenario over and over and over again for months and months and months. We talked about it. But it never made its way into a realistic outline.
Kevin Feige: Well, the ending was always more about fracturing the team completely before getting into Infinity War.
Joe Russo: We talked about lots of potential characters dying at the end of the movie. And we thought that it would undercut what is really the rich tension of the movie, which is this is Kramer vs Kramer. It’s about a divorce. If somebody dies, it would create empathy, which would change and allow for repair, and we didn’t want to do that.
Anthony Russo: The tragedy is the family falls apart. Not that the family falls apart and then somebody dies.
Interesting answers that invite one major question: will the tragedy in Infinity War be the loss of several superheroes?
RadioTimes.com previously asked the Russo brothers what to expect from the 2018 film, and the answer was pretty ominous. Joe explained: “There will certainly be some endings and some new beginnings in Infinity War. That’s the point, it’s culmination.”
That’s right, with all the new heroes coming through (Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel and Black Panther, we’re looking at you), Marvel’s phase three finale could get very bloody.
Especially when you consider that the contracts for original stars Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans are reported to expire after Infinity War. Plus Evans has hinted that he wouldn’t mind another actor picking up Captain America’s shield.
“What I’ll say to that is, you know, we’re committed to real stakes in the storytelling,” Joe said.
In summary: nobody dies in Avengers films… yet.
