Paul Nicholas plays an EastEnders villain like no other, says show boss – but will he be Sharon’s dad as well as Kathy’s husband?

Gavin will have a little foot in the past and a foot in the present, says executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins

EastEnders boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins has been offering up a few teasers about new Walford baddie Gavin Sullivan, the character being played by Paul Nicholas.

“If everything works out in the way I hope, Gavin is going to be an EastEnders villain like no other,” said the executive producer at a press conference. “He’s going to be modern and complex with a little foot in the past and a foot in the present.”

All of which has made us wonder about what exactly Gavin’s links to the history of Albert Square could be? We know that Kathy met and married Gavin while living in South Africa. But it’s surely no coincidence that Sharon has recently been searching for her birth dad – a man who we know to also be called Gavin. Could they be one and the same? Is Sharon fated to be Kathy’s stepdaughter?

It would certainly make for some intriguing family dynamics. And after all, Treadwell-Collins has already stated that Gavin is “holding the key to many more of the Square’s secrets”.

Speaking about his signing to the BBC1 soap, Paul Nicholas said recently: “I am delighted to be joining the wonderful cast for what is going to be an exciting time ahead. I can’t wait to get started and see what’s in store for my character.”
