Chris Gascoyne is to make a Coronation Street comeback as Peter Barlow in time for screen step-mum Deirdre’s funeral.
The ITV soap is planning a send-off for the late Anne Kirkbride’s character, with emotional scenes expected to be broadcast this June.
“They asked me to go back to the Street for a couple of episodes and of course I said yes,” Gascoyne said today. “It is only right that Peter would be there, and if I can I will always want to keep that continuity. The show has been very good to me. I worked with Annie for 15 years and I loved her. She was a really lovely woman and I miss her.”
Peter was last seen on screen in November 2014 when he exited for a new life in Portsmouth after being released from prison. Now, though, Gascoyne is to reprise the role in order to pay his respects to Kirkbride, who died in January from cancer.
It was announced following the death of Kirkbride that Street bosses were working in consultation with the actress’s family in order to give Deirdre a fitting send off.
Speaking of this experience watching Corrie now that Deirdre is no longer on the Street, Gascoyne added to the Birmingham Mail: “When I watch it now, it’s very strange to think of Ken being there in Number One on his own. We will be saying goodbye to Deirdre but also to Annie, so it is bound to be very emotional.”
The actor is currently set to star in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice at Birmingham Rep from 15-30 May.
