Cilla Battersby-Brown to return to Coronation Street

Actress Wendi Peters will be back for a guest stint on the ITV soap in October

Loudmouth Cilla Battersby-Brown is to make a Coronation Street comeback later this year. Actress Wendi Peters, who was last seen as Cilla in 2008 Corrie spin-off DVD Out of Africa, will be back for a six-week stint in October.

Peters – who in her years away from the Street has been seen in Hacker Time, Sadie J and Celebrity MasterChef – said today: “I’m really thrilled to have the opportunity to revisit Cilla and the cobbles for a short while and to see what she has been up to for the last seven years.”

The soap’s producer Stuart Blackburn added: “We can’t wait to see Cilla back on the cobbles. She’s a truly unforgettable character who is at the heart of Corrie’s rich history.”

Cilla originally exited back in October 2007 after inheriting a £45,000 necklace from a pensioner who died while in her care. During her time in Weatherfield, Cilla was involved in a number of comedy exploits with partner Les Battersby, most notably when a bathtub fell through the floor of their house thanks to the weight of Great Dane Schmeichel.

Exact details of Cilla’s reappearance are being kept under wraps, but the storyline will help facilitate Jennie McAlpine’s (Fiz) maternity leave when she leaves the show in the autumn to have her first baby.
