OutKast’s André 3000 to play Jimi Hendrix in biopic

The rapper will begin shooting the film in Ireland later this month after years of blocked attempts to make a film about the late musician

OutKast rapper André 3000 will play Jimi Hendrix in a new biopic set to begin shooting in Ireland later this month, according to the Irish Film & Television Network.

All Is By My Side is written and directed by Three Kings writer John Ridley. It will deal with Hendrix’s London breakthrough in 1966 and 1967 after being discovered in a New York club by Linda Keith, then girlfriend of Rolling Stone Keith Richards.

The news follows several recent blocked attempts to make a Hendrix-related film, including a Paul Greengrass project, due to refusals to license the late-singer’s songs.

André 3000 – real name André Benjamin – has previously starred in a handful of films, including Guy Ritchie’s Revolver and the 2006 OutKast musical Idlewild.

In 2008 the rapper told MTV, “everybody wants to do the movie, but there are so many things that go into a biopic. It’s kinda like, until you are on set doing it you can’t say what’s going on.”
