Our Score
Peter Jackson's epic but uneven Hobbit trilogy finally comes to an end, with the director once more at the peak of his powers, marshalling elves, dwarves, orcs and mortal men in awesomely staged conflict. Despite having the title role, Martin Freeman's Bilbo is again a supporting character; it's Thorin (Richard Armitage) who is the real heart of the story, with the dwarf hunkering down at Erebor to protect the glittering dunes of gold that Smaug the dragon has left behind. Elsewhere, Jackson is guilty of lavishing too much time on minor characters, and on the romance between elvish warrior Evangeline Lilly (his invention, not JRR Tolkien's) and dwarf Aidan Turner. The one-on-one battles generate much more intensity, especially Legolas (Orlando Bloom) going toe-to-toe with an orc on a falling bridge and Thorin's showdown with evil Azog the Defiler atop a frozen waterfall. Even if Jackson doesn't match the gravitas of his earlier Lord of the Rings films, he succeeds in leaving Middle-earth on an adrenaline-pumping high.

Dwarf king Thorin reclaims control of his homeland, but his descent into madness places him on the brink of war with his human and elf allies. As Thorin's Hobbit ally Bilbo tries to save the tormented ruler from himself, a vast horde of orcs gathers to destroy them all. Conclusion of the fantasy adventure trilogy, starring Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Luke Evans and Orlando Bloom.
