While this December’s Doctor Who Christmas special is officially the last we’ll see of Pearl Mackie’s companion Bill, it turns out the actress is open to returning – and she says there’s plenty more she’d like to discover about her character.
“I think you can never explore enough of any character,” she told RadioTimes.com and other journalists on the set of festive episode Twice Upon a Time.
“Well, you need to let the audience decide that really, don’t you? But yeah.
“I think one of the things about Bill is that she’s very real,” she went on. “She’s very human – and with any person, there’s always more to explore.
“It’s not like ‘Oh OK that’s great, that’s it, that’s my book, I’m done.’ Do you know what I mean?”
“So yeah, I think there’s room for plenty more exploration if that happened.”
You heard it here first – the campaign for Bill’s Doctor Who return starts now. And more generally Mackie said she was delighted by the positive reaction her performance had inspired over the last series.
“It’s been amazing,” she said. “I mean, I don’t think it could have gone better if I planned it. It’s phenomenal.
“I really like Bill, and I really responded well to her when I first read her. So I’m just overwhelmingly pleased that other people have as well.
“I think it’s fantastic, and it’s just been a very joyous – well, not always joyous – a very joyously received series, and I’m really pleased to be part of that.”
And who knows? Maybe the joy won’t end this Christmas after all…
Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time airs on BBC1 on Christmas Day (Monday 25th December) at 5:30pm
