Emmerdale star John Middleton has revealed that there will be no let-up in the drama for Ashley and Laurel over the coming months, particularly when it comes to the child that the pair of them are currently expecting.
“At the moment, we’re filming the birth of Laurel and Ashley’s baby, which is very dramatic,” said the actor.
Pregnant Laurel has recently been seen leaving Ashley and turning to drink again, only to later reconcile with her husband. Now, it seems that the pair will remain united in the face of Ashley’s diagnosis of early onset vascular dementia.
“I’d some up the next few months for Ashley as being a tragic love story – but I can say no more than that, I’m afraid,” the actor told Inside Soap.
Speaking about the impact of the storyline, Middleton added: “Everywhere I go, people talk to me about it – everyone seems to know someone with the condition. So I’m aware of what a huge responsibility we have.
“The fact that we’re able to bring the issue to people’s attention is great, too.”
Emmerdale boss Iain MacLeod also recently divulged what lay ahead for Ashley and Laurel, warning fans of the soap that they should brace themselves for heartache:
“We wanted to be relatively gentle with the progression of Ashley’s deterioration and show the low level elements of what Ashley is experiencing before we get to the really big stuff.
“I can’t talk about when it might become a clinical matter that Laurel can’t deal with. But Ashley is going to have a fairly significant downturn around September or October time.
“We want to do the story justice and reflect all of the phases that anyone living with dementia will recognise and do it in a non-soapy, straightforward way.”
