EastEnders actor Harry Reid has expressed hopes that his character Ben Mitchell will have an affair with Dean Wicks.
“Do you know what I’d love to see? I’d love it if Ben went for an older straight guy and tried to turn him. Someone like Dean would be a good one to target. It would be an amazing storyline,” he said to the Daily Star.
Current storylines have seen Ben become involved with Paul Coker despite being in a relationship with Abi Branning, while Dean has been romancing Roxy Mitchell.
Reid’s comments come as Ofcom decided not to investigate further following recent scenes broadcast on the BBC1 soap that saw Ben enjoy an illicit tryst with Paul next to an open coffin at the local funeral parlour.
The broadcast watchdog received 76 complaints but said in a statement: “We found the scenes were justified in the context of a long-running plotline and sexual contact between the characters was implied rather than overt. Our rules don’t discriminate between scenes involving opposite-sex and same-sex couples.”
As for how the character of Ben has been received since Reid took over the role, the actor added: “I’ve had some great feedback from the gay community about how I play Ben.”
