Hollyoaks‘ Cleo McQueen (Nadine Mulkerrin) and Joel Dexter (Rory Douglas-Speed) are seemingly over for good as she catches the eye of hunky newcomer Mitchell Deveraux (Imran Thomas) on Friday 8 February.
The cursed couple have had a tumultuous history dogged by Joel’s commitment to his religion, Cleo’s drug addiction and her eating disorder ordeal, which saw her collapse with a heart attack at the altar on their wedding day last year and ultimately led to her and Joel splitting for good. Luckily things are much happier off screen, as actors Mulkerrin and Douglas-Speed are engaged!
As her character contemplates the possibility of moving on with a new man, RadioTimes.com caught up with Mulkerrin to discuss whether Cleo can find happiness…
How is Cleo’s recovery from bulimia going? It’s going really well, but everyone is still quite mindful of it. Obviously Christmas is quite a challenging time for people who suffer from eating disorders, and they did touch on that slightly in the Christmas episode. I think Hollyoaks have a duty of care to not totally forget about issue storylines and are really good at being sensitive. Cleo has definitely moved forward and has a better relationship with food.
What happens when Cleo meets newcomer Mitchell? He has a dramatic entrance! Bless Imran Adams, his very first scene he had to film for Hollyoaks was a strip tease in the pub in front of an audience so that was quite impressive! If you can come to Hollyoaks and get your clothes off straight away then I’m impressed…
Is there romance in store for the pair? I think Mitchell and Cleo have a bright future ahead, it’s exciting. I know the fans will be sad for #Cleoj to be over, but Cleo and Joel have been through quite a lot and never quite seem to figure it out, so maybe she needs a new man in her life. Mitchell is a good egg and from a lovely family so he could be what she needs! I love working with Imran, he’s such a great addition to the cast.
Apart from your fiance, who are you closest to in the cast? Diane Langton, who plays Nana McQueen. I love her to bits! She came to Magaluf with us last year, and she’s just a little fire cracker. We had to do a scene the other day where all the McQueens were dancing and I just thought I couldn’t do this in front of anyone else. I’m so glad that we work together regularly and we all love each other and were just like a big family.
What is the best thing about working on Hollyoaks? The best thing is hanging out with the likes of Rory, my fiancé! And of course everyone I get to work with. I’m always being challenged with brilliant storylines, so I consider myself a very lucky girl.
