Who is Val Stones? The Great British Bake Off 2016 contestant guide

Everything you need to know about Val, the former headteacher and amateur baker joining GBBO 2016

The Great British Bake Off 2016 contestants: Val Stones

Age: 66

From: Somerset

Profession: Retired primary school headteacher

Who is Val?

Val is originally from Conisbrough near Doncaster but now lives with husband Ian near Yeovil. Aged 15 she took over the family baking and has stayed at the helm of the kitchen now for over 50 years.

In her spare time, the former headteacher loves to exercise and can often be found doing aerobics in her kitchen whilst she waits for jam to boil or her bread to prove. Does a tent yoga session beckon? Watch this space.

What is Val’s baking style?

Traditional. In fact, so traditional that Val says she can make the classics with her eyes closed (which surely should be a Bake Off technical by now). However, we won’t be getting the same bake every week from Val – she enjoys searching the internet for new recipes in her spare time.

How well is Val doing?

Val had an extremely close shave in Biscuit Week, coming very close to being sent home after her gingerbread representation of New York collapsed. Luckily for her, Louise’s wedding scene also turned into a nightmare.

She was in trouble, that’s for sure – but then she came alive in Bread Week, winning the fiendish Dampfnudel technical challenge. Unfortunately, her ark bread centrepiece was another classic Val disaster. Will the real Val Stones please stand up?
