STEVE JOBS ★★★★

Proving to be as controversial in cinemas as he was in real life, the founder of Apple is the subject of a biopic that has seriously impressed critics at the same time as being pulled from thousands of theatres in the US. Focusing on three moments in Jobs’s life, ie the launch of certain key products, the film casts Michael Fassbender as the obsessive visionary who many hoped would fail. Even if there are some who have the same attitude towards the film, Danny Boyle cannot be faulted in his treatment of the story.

THE LADY IN THE VAN ★★★

Maggie Smith has enormous fun playing the real-life bag lady who lived in a van in the garden of playwright Alan Bennett. An unconventional comedy drama that’s quirky without being caricatured.

THE HALLOW ★★★★

If you’re going to move to a secluded forest in a remote area of rural Ireland, you shouldn’t really be surprised when something terrible happens. Joseph Mawle and his wife Bojana Novakovic battle demonic forces from the woods in this suspenseful horror from Corin Hardy. Despite a slow start, it builds to something quite compelling.

TANGERINE ★★★★

Following the travails of two transgender prostitutes on the streets at Christmas eve, this comic drama was made entirely from iPhone footage, giving it a gritty and immediate feel to match the subject matter.
