Coldplay and One Direction have been confirmed to appear on The X Factor final next weekend – but Adele, who is recovering from throat surgery, will not perform.

Also appearing during the two programmes on 10 and 11 December will be X Factor alumni Leona Lewis and JLS, along with Michael Bublé.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said: “We’re all big X Factor fans so we’re very excited to play live on the show.”

This marks a change in attitude since October when, at the launch of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto album, Martin was asked whether the band would consider performing a duet with a finalist: “No,” he replied. “We all love The X Factor and we enjoy the show, but we can’t go on it. We do something different, and we’re far too old… we could never appear on the show.”

It is not, however, yet known whether Coldplay will perform by themselves, or with a contestant.

Bublé will be hoping Simon Cowell doesn’t make an appearance on the judging panel: in a Radio Times interview this week, he told the story of how, when he sang on American Idol in 2007, Cowell crushed him by rolling his eyes during his performance of Call Me Irresponsible. “He looked at me and… that was it, I was done,” Bublé said. “It killed me. My confidence dropped.”

Next weekend’s shows mark the first time the X Factor final has been staged at Wembley. About 10,000 fans will see the show live each night at the venue.

Judge Gary Barlow said: “This is the biggest final The X Factor has ever done. It’s going to be an amazing night.”

On Saturday 10 December, the three finalists will sing two songs each with the public voting for who they want to win. The contestant with the lowest number of votes will be axed – without a sing-off in front of the judges. The two remaining singers go head-to-head on Sunday.

This is a change in format from last year, when at the same stage four acts were still in contention: Cher Lloyd, One Direction, Rebecca Ferguson and eventual winner Matt Cardle.

The semi-final takes place tomorrow night between Marcus Collins, Amelia Lily, Little Mix and Misha Bryan. Following the announcement that there will be no sing-off there either, Misha Bryan is the favourite to be eliminated.
