EastEnders star Dean Gaffney has revealed reprising his role as Robbie Jackson was like coming home.
“Sean O’Connor, the boss, said in our first meeting he wanted me to come home, which was such a nice thing to say,” shared Gaffney on the red carpet at this evening’s British Soap Awards.
“It’s a privilege to be asked back because at the end of the day acting is a hard business,” he continued. “I’ve got children I need to put presents under the tree for. And it’s a job I did from when I was 15 and I don’t any different, and I love it. And I need the money!”
Teasing what’s lined up for the much-loved character, who first appeared on screen back in 1993, Gaffney promised: “Robbie has come back with a vengeance. I haven’t just come back to order pints in the Vic or cups of tea in the cafe – he’s straight back on the square causing some ructions with the market traders.
Asked who he’s missed the most, the actor said he was especially pleased to be reunited with another of the original Jackson clan.
“I love Natalie Cassidy (Sonia), I’ve missed working with her but I see her all the time – she’s like a sister in real life. There are people like Steve McFadden (Phil Mitchell) it’s great to see again and al the old faces, even the new people have been welcoming, they say I’m part of the fabric of the show which is lovely.”
