Over 4000 fans of Radio 4 soap opera The Archers have been showing their ‘solidari-tea’ with those suffering domestic abuse ahead of the start of Helen Titchener’s trial.
Long-suffering Helen (Louiza Patikas) currently faces two charges – Attempted Murder and Wounding with Intent – after stabbing her abusive husband Rob (Timothy Watson), as part of a domestic abuse storyline that listeners have heard unravel on air over the past three years.
Now, Ambridge devotees have been sharing photos of themselves posing with cups of tea on social media, using the hashtag #FreeHelen.
Among those who’ve shown support are Sara Cox, Gogglebox’s Kate Bottley, Tony Robinson, Anneka Rice, Jenni Murray, Casualty’s Suzanne Packer and David Archer himself AKA actor Timothy Bentinck.
Speaking ahead of Helen’s trial commencing on Sunday, a spokeswoman for The Archers said today: “We’re astonished by the reaction to this storyline and it’s heartwarming to see thousands of Archers fans – both men and women – rally in solidari-tea with Helen and real life women in similar situations.”
