Former Play School presenter Derek Griffiths is to make his first appearance on Coronation Street in the coming weeks when he shares screen time with actress Paula Lane, who plays Kylie Platt.
Beautician Kylie will be seen paying a visit to client Sadie for her nail appointment, only to be shown in by her husband Freddie (Griffiths) who explains that Sadie has died and that he’d like Kylie to do his wife’s nails for the funeral.
Kylie – who has had her fill of dead bodies after killing off Callum last year – manages to put thoughts of the late, unlamented drug dealer aside and gets on with the job, leaving Freddie grateful. And it looks like an unlikely friendship will form between the pair as Freddie prepares to say a final goodbye to his beloved wife…
Speaking at the time of his signing to the ITV soap, Griffiths said: “I remember being a young boy and watching Violet Carson [as Ena Sharples] on Coronation Street. She was a brilliant character that people loved to hate and later when I became an actor and played the villain in panto many times those are qualities I would bring to the role.
“When I came for my audition one of the first things I saw was a huge photo of Violet Carson on the wall. I am very much looking forward to walking in those hallowed footsteps.”
Coronation Street producer Stuart Blackburn added: “I was utterly delighted when Derek accepted this role and I cannot wait to work with him and see him on the cobbles.”
Derek Griffiths’s Corrie debut will be broadcast on Friday 11 March.
