EastEnders: Denny’s life left hanging in the balance in Christmas Day cliffhanger

Viewers left anxious as to whether Sharon's son will pull through

Dennis Rickman has been left on the critical list at the close of the Christmas Day episode of EastEnders.

The festive special of the BBC1 soap saw Denny involved in a car crash that landed him in hospital with swelling on the brain.

And in the final seconds of the hour-long instalment, mum Sharon was seen yelling for medical assistance after her son stopped moving.

Viewers now have to wait until tomorrow night’s visit to Albert Square to see whether Denny will turn out to be the mystery character that soap bosses have promised will be killed off.

The cliffhanger came following a fraught hour of drama that saw Dennis thrown from a car that Phil Mitchell had been driving while drunk.

But in a surprise twist, Ian told Phil that he would take the blame for the crash in exchange for Phil stopping Sharon from shopping Bobby to the police.

It seems, though, that Ian’s efforts to protect his family have counted for nothing. After growing increasingly disturbed by Bobby’s behaviour since he killed Lucy back in 2014, Jane now intends to go to the police herself.

So is this it for Bobby, who is now – nearly two years on from having committed the crime – fully aware that he was responsible for the death of his sister?

EastEnders continues on Boxing Day at 7.30pm on BBC1.
