Paddy’s whereabouts on the night of Robert’s shooting have finally been revealed with tonight’s ‘rewind’ episode of Emmerdale showing that he was sharing a surprise moment of passion with newcomer Tess.
Paddy’s extra-marital fling may have been a spur-of-the-moment act, but actor Dominic Brunt says that the plotline will make us reassess our opinion the village vet.
“We want it to be an uncomfortable watch,” he says. “Paddy is perfectly happy in his marriage. So what he’s now doing is slightly seedy, to begin with. Our producer Kate Oates said to me that Paddy might now come across as a bit of a baddie and asked whether I was OK with that. And I am. You can’t be a saint for 18 years. Paddy is a good person, but he’s just made a ridiculously bad decision.”
Scenes just broadcast on the ITV soap saw Paddy unburden himself to fellow club goer Tess about his recent shooting and current concerns over Aaron’s welfare, only for the conversation to then take a passionate turn. Viewers around the country were no doubt aghast that Paddy could stray from wife Rhona, so is Brunt prepared for a backlash from fans?
“I’m not looking for sympathy and I haven’t wanted to change the scripts,” he insists. “In the past, I’ve been in scenes where people have said, ‘I’m not doing that because the audience will hate me’. But I’ve never understood that. I’ve been waiting for something like this and I’m going to indulge it.”
And with producer Kate Oates promising that Tess will be “mixing things up in the village”, can we expect she and Paddy to be showing any sign of guilt over their actions? “There’s loads of guilt, but it didn’t stop them, though,” says Brunt. All of which leaves us wondering whether Paddy will be able to resist further temptation should we meet Tess again in the future…
