New EastEnders villain Gavin Sullivan makes Archie Mitchell look like a Care Bear, says show boss

Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Gillian Taylforth and Paul Nicholas reveal what's in store for Kathy and Gavin over the coming weeks

EastEnders boss Dominic Treadwell-Collins has promised that new Walford evildoer Gavin Sullivan will bring fresh danger to Albert Square.

“Paul Nicholas has created the most manipulative and dangerous EastEnders villain we’ve ever had. He makes Archie Mitchell look like a Care Bear,” says the soap’s executive producer.

Next week’s episodes will see hard man Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) tangling with Gavin as he tries to free Kathy from the clutches of her manipulative husband. But it seems that Gavin will not be taking no for an answer. “Gavin doesn’t take things quietly. You don’t want to bring Kathy just for the sake of it. You want to tell a really exciting thriller,” adds Treadwell-Collins.

Both Kathy and Gavin faked their own demises as part of an insurance scam that saw Kathy play dead for over a decade. But Kathy’s recent attempts to flee from Gavin look set to send shockwaves through the Square. As for how Kathy will explain her absence to sons Ian and Ben, actress Gillian Taylforth says:

“She’s going to have to find a way. As a mother myself, I can’t even think about driving off and leaving my children behind. But Kathy has been manipulated by this man who controls everything she does. She can’t function without Gavin.

“But hopefully she can get her boys back. Bit by bit, they find out why she’s become the person she has and they start to understand that their mum’s been brainwashed. I’m hoping they forgive her.”

As for the man himself, actor Paul Nicholas says of his character: “I wouldn’t say he was the most charming man I’ve ever played. But I’m very pleased to be a part of the show.

“I’ve done a lot of theatre and while touring is great, after a while it does become a little bit repetitive because you’re doing the same show every night. The great thing about doing EastEnders is you don’t quite know what’s coming next and that keeps all the actors on their toes.”
