The Masoods are to face massive adversity over the summer months that will change the family forever.
Speaking exclusively to RadioTimes.com about the upcoming plotline, actor Nitin Ganatra – who plays patriarch Masood – said: “We’re building up to something big that will be on screen in a couple of months’ time. It’s the first time I’ve ever got weepy reading a script and it gives me goose pimples just talking about it.
“It’s a very upsetting storyline. Really sad – but full of heart.”
The family is currently at the centre of a number of high-profile EastEnders storylines. Recent episodes have seen Masood’s son Tamwar embark on a relationship with Nancy Carter, while daughter Shabnam has just got engaged to market-stall holder Kush Kazemi.
Next week’s visits to Albert Square will see Masood trying to track down Shabnam’s long-lost daughter, while the love triangle between Shabs, Kush and Stacey also takes a fresh twist.
But it’s in the upbeat run-up to Kush and Shabnam’s nuptials that catastrophe strikes. Added Ganatra: “It’s going to be a fun build-up to the wedding. There are rumours of Carmel and Masood getting it on and there’s a lot of comedy. And then we’re going to pull the rug out from under you.
“The aftermath of this will run all the way up to Christmas and I’m really excited at the thought of flexing my acting muscles.”
As to whether old faces from the family will return for the wedding, Ganatra said he doesn’t think Zainab and Syed will return: “There are no plans to bring Zainab back. And I know that Syed isn’t returning. But it’s going to be a quiet occasion, the opposite to Syed and Amira’s wedding.
“So it doesn’t look like there’ll be a family reunion, but who knows? Things change at the last minute in this place.”
