Chas Dingle may be fully aware that Robert Sugden is a heartbreaker and a liar, but she has no idea that he’s also potentially murderous, says actress Lucy Pargeter.

Scenes to be shown this week on Emmerdale will see Chas and Robert join forces to search for a missing Aaron, who is lying injured and unconscious following a fall. But when an argument breaks out and Chas threatens to tell Chrissie about what’s been going on between the two illicit lovers, Robert looks set to take deadly action.

“Chas doesn’t realise that Robert could be potentially dangerous. He doesn’t look it, does he?” says actress Lucy Pargeter. “He’s got the gift of the gab, but she doesn’t think there’s anything more to it than that. All she sees is that Aaron’s deterioration is down to Robert. This is a man who’s never going to come out as bisexual or leave his wife. So all Chas can see is the pain that Aaron is going through. But she’s just not very subtle about trying to help.”

Speaking recently, actor Ryan Hawley admitted that Robert could very well snap once again, mere months after doing away with Katie Sugden. So, just what is his character intending to do with that large rock he’s brandishing behind Chas’s back?

“He’s at a really desperate point because Chas isn’t going to back down,” he says. “We saw with Katie the lengths he can go to. So it’ll be really interesting to see what happens when he picks up that rock. Is he planning to kill her?”

While Emmerdale bosses are remaining tight-lipped about the result of Robert’s actions, Chas will unknowingly survive – at least, on that occasion. But the Woolpack landlady isn’t out of the woods yet. By Thursday, Robert will be seen making a phone call to a very shady contact, explaining that he needs to get rid of someone, permanently.

“Robert has spent nine years away from Emmerdale and we don’t really know what this guy has done while he’s been gone. There is this really grey area about Robert,” adds Hawley. “He could be someone who’s really quite sinister and dark.”

As for Lucy Pargeter, she’s jokingly tried to reassure herself that ignorance could be bliss for Chas, especially where the hitman is concerned. “It’s best she doesn’t know, isn’t it? Because it would really ruin your day, wouldn’t it?” she laughs. “You’re out having a nice time and someone’s lying in wait around the corner!”
