Charity’s old feelings for Cain look set to resurface next week when he proves to be a source of support during her trial.
“She knows that she shouldn’t go there, but she can’t help herself. Charity is very naughty!” says actress Emma Atkins. “She’s always fancied him and she’s now seeing what great qualities he has. They are two of a kind.”
Cain is, of course, currently married to Moira, but the pair of them have recently given shelter to Charity following her eviction from Home Farm. And now it seems that Charity has no qualms about taking advantage of the situation.
“You can say that there’s a bit of a triangle going on. Honestly, Charity gets away with murder!” continues Atkins. “Cain and Moira put a roof over her head, so you’d think that Charity wouldn’t push it.”
And does the actress think that fans want to see Charity and Cain reignite their romance? “They’re the couple that everyone would love to be together – but goodness knows what might happen if the writers revisited that. I don’t think she’s ever stopped loving him. And she’s realised that all the power and money she’s always been after doesn’t necessarily make you happy.”
Charity, though, does have rather more pressing concerns next week as she faces trial on charges of insurance fraud and perverting the course of justice. Viewers are now seeing Charity getting payback after 12 months of wicked misdeeds, but does Atkins believe that her character deserves to go to prison?
“I personally think she does because you can’t for one minute defend her actions. She’s done some dreadful things. I wouldn’t want to play any other character and there are wonderful elements to playing a soap baddie. But she needs punishment to make her think about the bad things she’s done.”
