I could say Ant and Dec, Mel and Sue… but I want to say Roy and Hayley. I know that sounds a bit silly but that relationship was so special.
Did you get on with David [Neilson, who plays Roy] off set as well?
From my first day on set, when we both walked in with our copies of The Guardian rolled up under our arms, I knew we would get on. When you’re working that closely with somebody, it’s like a second marriage.
It must have been hard leaving the show.
I was absolutely devastated… I had to take myself off to the Lake District with my dog for a couple of days to get my act together.
Who should win RT’s Audience Award?
I’m a real believer in state schools and to see how committed the teachers were in Educating Yorkshire was incredible. We also underestimate our young people. There’s good and bad, but the programme showed they’re complex and fantastic.
British Academy Television Awards are on Sunday 18 May at 8:00pm on BBC1.
