Gino D’Acampo: French food is poncey

The Italian chef reckons his nation's food is the best in the world, and only the French would disagree with him

Chef Gino D’Acampo has called French food “poncey”, adding that “only the French people say French food is the finest cuisine in the world.”

“If you ask anyone else, they will tell you the best food in the world is Italian,” the This Morning regular continued in this week’s Radio Times magazine. “It’s true! It’s a fact! French food is too poncy.”

The idea that Italian food is the best in the world is hardly a surprising one coming from the Italian chef, who is set to return to the parts of Italy where he grew up in new series Gino’s Italian Escape. But it’s not just the food which he reckons Italians are better at…

“We Italians respect food and ingredients more than anyone else,” he added. “When we sit down to eat, we enjoy eating. We don’t fill our face up and then get on. We sit down because we use food and drink to socialise with people, because that’s what we like to do.”
