The X Factor 2012: Jade Ellis is voted out

No deadlock required for the first time this year, as Union J survive the Sunday sing-off

Jade Ellis has become the fourth act to be eliminated from this year’s X Factor live shows, having lost the Sunday-night sing-off to Union J.

Jade lost the judges’ vote 3-1 to the boy band, with only her own mentor, Tulisa Contostavlos, wanting to keep Jade in the contest.

On Saturday night, Union J had delivered a solid version of Beautiful Nightmare by Beyoncé. Jade Ellis sang Freak like Me by Adina Howard, looking slightly uncomfortable with a raunchier production than normal.

In the sing-off, Union J went first with a lachrymose interpretation of Perfect by Pink; Jade responded with one of her best performances of the series, White Flag by Dido.

Louis Walsh opened the judging, crying and saving his own act, Union J. Tulisa Contostavlos also looked after her own, levelling the vote at 1-1 by sending Union J home. Nicole Scherzinger said Jade has “one of my favourite voices in this competition”, but still opted to vote against her. This left Gary Barlow with the choice of eliminating Jade, or taking it to deadlock.

Gary said Union J were “good, [but] not exceptional”, commenting that he thought there was more to come from them. Questioning Jade’s commitment to the competition, he sent Jade home.

In a poll of RadioTimes.com readers, Rylan Clark was, as always, clearly named as the contestant who most deserved to go, with 48% of the vote. Christopher Maloney was readers’ second most disliked act, scoring 19%. Jade polled 8% and Union J just 4%.
