Artem fractures spine on Strictly Come Dancing

Popular pro dancer may not be able to take part this weekend

Strictly pro dancer Artem Chigvintsev has suffered a spine fracture and may not be able to take part in this weekend’s shows.

“Artem injured himself during rehearsals on Friday,” said the BBC. “Following medical attention, he has been diagnosed with a transverse process fracture of the lumbar spine.”

After the incident during his rehearsal with celebrity partner Holly Valance, it was believed he had strained a muscle and he went on to perform a slightly revised version of his jive routine for the Saturday-night show. The BBC’s statement continued: “We have been told that this sort of fracture is completely stable and he has been advised that there is no untoward effect from him continuing to dance.”

The jive earned the pair the second highest score of the night with 34 out of 40 but, visibly in pain, Artem was then replaced for the professional display dance. So far this week he has choreographed Holly Valance’s next dance, but Brendan Cole – whose partner Lulu was voted off on Sunday – has been training with her.

Artem briefly took to Twitter to say: “Thank you for all your get well wishes.” He’s not a prolific tweeter but did write before the weekend saying: “Morning to all my lovely pips! Just gonna say very very sore, getting up wasn’t easy.”

This is his second year on Strictly Come Dancing and also his second injury: before winning the last series with Kara Tointon, he suffered a neck and shoulder injury.
